About Classes With Robert Hauk

Robert has many years of experience teaching tango. He has been dancing tango for 11 years and has spent a great amount of time in the milongas in Buenos Aires. He is recognized and respected by the milogueros. His main influence is Susanna Miller, having studied with her for 9 years.

Because of his expertise, he is recognized as one of the leading American instructors of the close embrace milonguero-style tango. He has taught at many festivals and in many cities throughout the US.

This is a great opportunity to learn the close embrace apilado-style of tango that will enable you to dance effectively in close spaces like the salons in Buenos Aires. If you have had some workshops with Susanna Miller this workshop will help you continue to develop and expand upon what you learned with Susanna.

We talked to Robert last weekend when we were in Portland to perform and teach a weekend intensive. He gave us a description of the classes he is planning to teach here.

Class Descriptions for the April 2006 North Florida Mini-Festival with Robert Hauk.

The classes are composed of two tracks of progressive classes, one track for beginners and one for intermediates/advanced dancers.

There is some overlap between the two tracks. Both tracks will develop similar movements. However, the intermediate
track will go farther.

The last two classes of the intermediate series are musicality oriented. We will look at the music of many orchestras, in order to give dancers more ideas for dancing musically, and freely.

Classes Friday Evening-April 14:

Beginners Class 1: 6:30-7:45PM, Apilado Embrace Tango Foundations

We will develop the posture end the embrace. We will explore walking in this embrace, and discover the foundation mechanics of dancing in the apilado embrace.

Intermediate/Advanced Class 1: 8:00-9:15PM Tango is Walking

We will explore walking in the apilado embrace. We will develop the mechanics of walking in parallel and crossed feet.

Classes Saturday Afternoon-April 15:

Beginners Class 2: 12:00-1:15PM Simple Rhythmic Steps

We will develop a small but very useful vocabulary of rhythmic steps to spice up the dance and begin the exploration of the music.

Intermediate/Advanced Class 2: 1:30-2:45PMTurning to the left

We will explore three left turning movements that are fundamental to this style of tango.

Beginners Class 3: 3:00-4:15PM Check Step Turns

We will develop the check step turns and from them we will develop the ocho cortado, a classic step of the Apilado embrace.

Intermediate/Advanced Class 3: 4:30-5:45PM Turning to the Right

We will develop right turning movements in this class. In this embrace it is common that the leader walks backward to turn to the right. We will develop this situation, and consider a few variations.

Classes Sunday Morning/Afternoon-April 16:

Beginners Class 4: 10:00-11:15AM Walking in Crossed Feet

We will develop the mechanics of walking in crossed feet, and introduce the back ocho. We will learn to comfortably change the orientation of the feet from parallel feet to crossed feet.

Intermediate/Advanced Class 4: 11:30AM-12:45PM Putting Things Together 1, Rhythm

We will begin combining the movements we have studied so far. We will develop a rhythmic style that is fun and energetic. We will explore the music of many orchestras.

Beginners Class 5: 1:00-2:15PM Putting Things Together

We will combine the movements developed so far. This will give students ideas of how they can improvise and invent their own combinations.

Intermediate/Advanced Class 5: 2:30-3:45PM Putting Things Together 2, Slowing Down

In this class we will explore using the spaces in the music for pauses. We will explore different music than in the last class, and expand the horizons into the music of the later golden age.
